Food demand in the EU under conditions of economic slowdown / Wyrzykowski Paweł // Ekonomika APK. - 2014. - № 1 - P. 99

Over the period of 2011-2012 the scope of economic activities in many Member States decreased. As a result of that the demand for food declined. The situation on labour market deteriorated - unemployment increased and employment went down. The rate of household income growth diminished. An upward trend in food prices in real terms was continued in 2012 corresponding to the previous year. Such developments were driven by negative consumer attitudes, which was reflected in their purchases decisions. In 2011 annual expenditure on food (in real terms) in the EU-27 averaged 0,6% down on the previous year. Presumably in 2012 the expenditure declined further which seems to be confirmed with the figures on retail sales. In 2012 as compared with 2011 the retail sales of food, beverages and tobacco at constant prices were 0,9% down and 1,3% down in the euro zone. Tabl.: 2. Figs.: 4.
